Hi!

Thank you for coming here! In this site, I'll be posting my writing process for some of my fics, including notes, reference pics and whatever else I feel like collecting here. Feel free to rumage around in the navigation bar. Enjoy your stay!

Fandoms

Right now I'm writing Better Call Saul (one Laloward fanfic), and a bunch of The Wire fics (Carver/Herc). I used to write little Avatar fics when I was 13 and that was my introduction to the word of fanfic. They sucked, and I hadn't written anything since, until I finished The Wire and realized there were zero fics on AO3 for Herc and Carver. We couldn't have that.

The process will be documented in the order the thoughts and ideas are developed, not in the order of each fic’s final timeline. Also spoiler alert for pretty much all stories listed in the navigation section to your left. If you want to be surprised as you read the fic I suggest you turn away now! But if you don’t care then yeah go ahead :)

The color coding of this section goes as it follows:

Howard is, yes: Hamlindigo Blue.

Lalo is purple.

Red refers to the cartel side of the story.

The Cars

Details and images of the cars featured.

1987 XJS V12 Jaguar.

1987 Jaguar XJS V12

  • Convertible - Restomod (slight)
  • Howard repaired the exhaust, but it was years ago. Told himself he would fix it whole one day, but he never got around to it.
  • What needs repairing?

    • a: Fuel system degradation. Howard let it sit too long, the gas tank gummed up. A few sessions to drain tank, replace lines.

    • b: Cooling system issues. Lalo needs to replace the radiator hose, flush it, install new water pump.

    • c: Break master cylinder leak. Soft pedal, inconsistent braking. Requires under the dash repairs.

    • d: Idle control and throttle adjustment. The car won't stay running. Surges. Lurches.

  • Early: Lalo comes in by afternoons. They talk while he works on Howard's car. Howard's expensive coffee machine is involved.

  • Mid: Lalo stays longer. Brings beers. Brings tools he leaves behind as an excuse.

  • Late: Working together H. in a t-shirt, informal, sitting on a workbench helping Lalo out.

  • Later: H. trying to keep hands to himself and get some actual work done. Lalo doesn't mind the stalling.

1970 Restomod Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1970 Restomod Chevrolet Monte Carlo

  • Lalo's canon car. In our version, it's better kept with a white streak down the middle. Lalo's own restomod project.
  • He could pick up whatever car he wanted off the Salamanca warehouse, but this is his baby. Keeps her in his hacienda and doesn't let anyone else work on her.
  • Restomod work:

    • a: Engine swap. Old 350 for a LT4 V8. "Looks old. Runs like hell. Like me!"

    • b: Chasis restoration. Took her apart completely. Sandblasted. Welded. Painted.

    • c: Modern suspension + disc brakes.

    • d: Custom interior: Leather, stereo.

    • e: Paint: Deep Metallic Black Cherry.

    • f: Custom personal details: A small engraving. A secret compartment. A cigar compartment. The seats go all the way back (lol). Or something silly like a snack compartment. (very Lalo). Howard thinks there's gonna be a gun in there, turns out it's just 1 watermelon Lucas Baby, 1 flask of mezcal and 1 imported chocolate.

  • Not convertible.
  • British Racing Green.
  • His public persona car.

The Players

Character studies and references.

Howard Hamlin standing up.
  • I swear I'm not gay bro I prommyyyyy......
  • Vain, but tries to seem down to earth. He got his first bank account with mesa verde at seven years old...
  • "A cowboy! Yes! I loved that cowboy!" ok queen... Likes a roughish man.
  • Forcing him to face this part of himself in his identity is so good... Mr. Image Man is gay?
  • Needs a little RUSH in his life. The kind that doesn't come from court rooms. Lalo can more than provide.
  • Car enthusiast, mostly bc it's good client talk fodder. Has a sports Jaguar in his garge that needs fixing. Lalo can help.
  • Dipping into Jorge's world could feel fresh, rejuvenating for Howard. He'd walk around the office with post fuck glow. People at work must think things are doing better with Cheryl. They aren't. He finds he couldn't care less right now.
  • Having this affair would make him so crazy insane. He'd crush Jorge against the garage wall and feel like a maiden with nosebleeds n shit.
Lalo coming out of his car.
  • I gift him with the skill of welding in my world. Because I love him.
  • Gifts Howard cufflinks / tie bars. Puts them on howard himself.
  • Likes restomods. So does Howard.
  • Howard likes making fancy coffees. Lalo likes cooking dinner.
  • Likes Howard's uppityness. Likes his less respectable side even more.
  • "Would Howard kill for me?" "Could I make him do it?"
  • Most of all: He wants enternteinment. You don't wanna bore Lalo.
  • Likes blondes lol.
  • Playing with Howard turns out to be way more fun than he originally expected. Because he rises to the bet.
  • Would offer a snack to a guy he killed just to amuse himself. Zero respect for corpses.
  • Is very used to cruelty and violence, yet seems to mostly use them as a functional tool, rather than a craving he seeks. That might be the Lalo-colored glasses on my end, though.

The Foothills

The Sandia Foothills form the base of the Sandia Mountains and are located in the Northeast Heights region of Albuquerque. This area includes the Sandia Foothills Open Space, which spans around 2,650 acres of steep, gravelly terrain marked by drainage channels and intersected hillsides. Geologically, they lie between the mountain's dramatic granite cliffs and Albuquerque’s East Mesa, featuring fan-shaped mounds of granite gravel shaped by erosion and water flow.

Recreation and Trails

The Sandia Foothills Open Space Park is a popular destination for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. It offers a variety of trails—ranging from easy to challenging—perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. These foothill trails provide proximity to wilderness beauty, panoramic views of the city, and a serene natural backdrop that’s hard to beat.

Ecology and Natural Characteristics

The foothills feature unique ecological zones with flora such as piñon pine, desert oaks, juniper, mountain mahogany, various cacti, and other chaparral vegetation more diverse than what you’d find in the city itself. They represent an important ecological buffer and recreational space between the urban setting and the higher elevations of the mountains.

The Wire

Notes on The Wire.

The Notes

Possible general structure:

1

One of them reveals too much. What could this be? Or maybe they just get drunk and hump in their jeans? Or should we start with them sparring, playful but loaded?

2

Repression. Denial. Use of jokes to avoid talking about it. Miscommunication and distance.

3

It ends with them on patrol. They see each other more clearly now. It’s a moment of introspection. Then - oh shit police emergency. It’s open ended, like the show likes to do.

Nevermind all that. New structure:

Tension in sets of three.

  • In the locker room. Sparring. Light and easy.
  • In the locker room. Post-offer. Noticing eachother.
  • Drinking by the railroads, Bunk and McNulty style. They arm wrestle. "Damn", Herc exhales, almost thoughtful.

But what if this was the general structure, with other things thrown in? For example:

  • Starts in the locker room.
  • They're starting the day. Routine. We said it’s set in season 3, so if we want it to be more plot heavy we can pull from the canon plot.
  • Maybe Herc wants to try some shenanigan with Carv like they used to do, like stealing money or whatever. But Carv is trying to change (or starting to want to change, at least), and he’s not so sure about this.
  • Second locker room scene. Carv keeps looking at Herc. Tells himself he’s just pondering the offer Herc made him, but it’s not just that. There’s more to his look, even if he won’t admit it.
  • (more plot)
  • Third locker room scene. Instead of being in the morning before the job, it is after. It’s nighttime, and they want to cap off the night. So, they go to the vacant spot to get hammered.
  • Drinking scene. Carv likes seeing Herc like this, loud and making zero sense to a non Herc speaker. Thankfully Carv is fluent in it.
  • Herc is rambling, and Carv is laughing, thinking “God, you’re a dumbass”. But the moment lingers.
  • They shoot the shit for a while. Loose and easy. They make each other laugh. Eventually Herc brings up the thing he offered to Carv. Carv’s not so sure. He’s getting tired of getting his ass busted for doing stuff like this. Usually with Herc. Okay, always with Herc.
  • Herc makes ‘em bet for it. Physical prowess, if he wins Carv will help him. If Carv wins…

The Knockos

Character studies and references.

Herc profile picture.
  • Less reflective.
  • Do, don’t think.
  • Can't reflect on professional faults, but ponders on masculinity and social cues.
  • Likes and trusts Carv, just as much as Carv trusts him.
  • Will open up a bit if he’s given time and reason to trust.
  • Has his limits and principles (however shifty they may be), like refusing to move that dead guy with Carv in season 3 (possible rift?)
  • Likes pussy sooo much he will not stop talking about it (gay?). Very sexist.
  • Lives off locker room talk, but sometimes sees it as more genuine discussions, unlike his environment who see it as pure banter / playing jokes on eachother.
  • Often worries Carv is pulling his leg and not being legit. To be fair, his fear is not unjustified (Gus Triandos?)
  • Has a lot of bravado, but evidently hes the least confident of the duo.
  • Would probably think Carv is pulling some big, overly elaborated prank on him.
  • Would need a lot of reassurance in order to believe otherwise.
Ellis Carver profile picture.
  • Is trying to do things better.
  • Knows how to handle Herc. How to “play” him.
  • Is more honest to himself about how he feels, but keeps it close to his chest for his own sake.
  • If he broaches the subject, it wouldn’t be direct. Knows Herc wouldn’t bite.
  • Is proficient in locker room talk and will use it to his advantage. (Not always his goal.)
  • Is beginning to question if Herc and him are on the same page as cops anymore.
  • Still trusts Herc immensely, to the point of asking him to move a dead body together.
  • Seems more confident than Herc, less need to front. In some cases, he’s more willing to appear less “macho” than Herc. Especially for the sake of the bit.

What do they do together besides policing?

CARV GETS INJURED BABYYYYYYY

So right now we busted his ribs...But what if it was even worse lol? Like a hip or a leg, something that really incapacitates the living shit outta him.

Maybe sprinkle in more Sobotka plot? Carv trying to bounce back too quickly?

Maybe on the final edit, accentuate Herc seeing Carv all banged up: Emphasis on his cuts and bruises, he DID fall one story down. It's not just the broken ribs.

OMG what if Herc has a past caring for someone...Remember how he reacted to Bodie's grandma? I'm thinking he had a sick older relative at some point growing up. Hits a hidden, little spot in him. A similar side of him gets activated here.
